NEW Volunteer Position: Property Assistant

KVHH is currently looking for a mature volunteer to find vacant lots suitable for building and homes for rehabilitation projects. This process involves work with city officials, local realtors, title offices, and others to locate and evaluate properties.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research potential property -- location, zoning, and condition of the property.
  • Orchestrate environmental reviews for property.
  • Check/research building regulations for property.
  • Meet with Executive Director on a regular basis to exchange information.
  • Assist with some administrative duties.

Qualifications:

  • Good organizational skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently/li>
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate computer knowledge.

Hours/Commitment:

This is an on-going position, with a minimum commitment of six months. Days and hours for this position are flexible with an average of 8-15 hours per week required. Some work may be done in the field or at home, but a minimum of two one-hour periods per week must be completed in the KVHH office.

Habitat ReStore

Volunteers are needed during the hours Habitat ReStore is open. If you can commit just a few hours per week, you can help Habitat ReStore flourish. Here are some current needs:

  • ReStore volunteerCustomer Service Assistants. Outgoing volunteers needed to help shoppers and donors during store hours.
  • Donation Coordinators. Help organize donation pick-ups and process paperwork.
  • Heavy Lifters. Help load and unload the Habitat ReStore truck; move and organize stock in the store.
  • Stock Organizers / Cleaners. Keeping stock organized and neat makes it easier to sell.

  • Habitat Volunteers Needed for Home Expo Hospitality. Dates: March 17 - 20, 2010
    Location: Former Sam's Club on Mall Drive near The Cossroads mall

    Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers will staff the Home Expo ticket booth during all the hours the Home Expo is open, March 17 - 20. The Home Builders Association of Greater Kalamazoo (HBAGK) HBAGK will donate $1 for every ticket sold at the Expo to Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity.

  • Help Wanted: Volunteer Construction Set-Up Assistant. Do you like browsing at building supply and hardware stores and have general knowledge about materials and supplies? Habitat for Humanity needs you! Help the construction team prepare for Saturday volunteer work by shoping for and delivering needed materials and supplies to Habitat construction sites on Fridays. Bring a friend -- this would be a great job for a pair. Some lifting and the ability to drive a pick up truck with a trailer required.   • Skilled Supervisors. Volunteers with skills in construction are needed to lead other volunteer groups on Saturdays. Training or teaching experience desirable. Time commitment: supervise one Saturday group per month. Required planning meetings with KVHH Construction Manager will be scheduled once a month or less.
  • Data Entry and Clerical Support. Computer-savvy volunteers are needed to help maintain our database. We need help entering volunteer hours and information, and updating our mailing list. Time commitment: 2 - 4 hours a week, Monday - Friday.
  • Lunch-time Receptionists. Answer phones and greet customers in our office during lunchtime on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, 11:45 am - 1:15 pm.
  • Habitat Gardeners. Help tend our garden. This plot, behind Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, accepts donations of perennials, shrubs, and trees which are used to landscape Habitat homes. We need volunteers to keep the beds weeded, mow the grass between the beds, and tend the plants. Time commitment: variable.
  • Family Selection Coordinators. Help recruit and evaluate potential home buyers. Includes community outreach, assisting with workshops, and monthly committee meetings. Time commitment: varies with workload. Can work a few afternoons or mornings each week as needed (6 - 10 hours per week). Flexible schedule. Should have good communications skills and commitment to our mission.
  • Special Events Team. Help prepare and present special events with KVHH. This includes receptions, open houses, and outreach events like the Home Expo. Time commitment: variable.
